Some Addicts Survive. "Saving Jake" Describes How.
By Chris Anderson
For 20 years I have been sending addicts out the door of my ICU, to the morgue, usually back to their habit. I'm an intensive care physician. One third of the patients in one of my Utah ICUs on any given day are addicts. Do we have a secret epidemic? Yes, we do. Addiction is a disease NOT a moral flaw. Effective treatment doesn't come in pill form, and there is no effective surgical cure. EVERYONE is at risk and many die. Until I read this inspiring book, I didn't really believe that some survive. From where I sit, they die with me, often alone, occasionally with their distraught family wailing at their feet. Their disease makes me feel so helpless. I read Saving Jake, nearly without stopping over two days. I'm buying 10 copies and placing them on the counter in my ICU and when families (addicts never ask) ask me what to do? "Here," I'll say, “take this book, you will find it helpful, if she/he makes it out of the unit alive.” Jake's story, what a gift. Some survive. Here's how! Thank you Jake, Bruce, D’Anne, and Alea.

Compassionate Connections
By Customer
I am not easily moved by the written word, as I respond more keenly to visual images, yet Burwell’s raw and authentic expression of her journey in the effort to save her son, and also herself, had a profound effect on me. Many of the passages in the author’s gut-wrenching struggles of survival stopped me in my tracks. I had to put the book down many times and just take deep breaths. Often it meant to wipe away salty tears, and/or just feel a deep compassionate connection to her through her agony of confusion, dashed hopes and holding on to patterns that she found to not be good for either her or Jake.
So many of the author’s descriptions of Jake reminded me of my own son (now in recovery for 13 years), my discovery of his addiction and the huge effect it had on me and our family. Burwell so aptly describes the shock and fallout that I, too, encountered. At that time he was 21 and had done a remarkable job of deception in hiding this from us. I know now it was just denial on my part. I only wish Saving Jake had been available then. I simply had to write heartfelt wishes of thanks for the strength and courage that it took to write this book for the world to know one family’s story and the author’s commitment to help others in the battle against this horrible disease.

"Saving Jake" Should be a Primer for Families in Crisis
By susan cashen
I was drawn to D'Anne Burwell's "Saving Jake: When Addiction Hits Home" because I know far too many families dealing with the horror of addiction. D'Anne's startling honesty about her son's struggle, along with the crushing impact it had on her family, touched this reader to her core. In a flash, a healthy, thriving child begins to live recklessly and within the strong grips of addiction, quickly plunges to a level where he is barely living at all. How do we save our own son or daughter, husband or wife, when he or she has been abducted so abruptly from our lives?
"Saving Jake", an emotionally gripping memoir references much of Ms. Burwell's research on the subject of addiction -- a lifeline for anyone searching for the means to personally cope and save a loved one from this insidious disease. The book should serve as a primer for families in crisis to help them navigate through the turmoil, stress, fear, and heartache addiction inflicts. It is also an inspiring tale of survival, and a mother's resolve to do all she can -- learn, listen, and change -- to save her child. Five stars from this avid reader!
