About the Author
Born in the Midlands of England, Anne spent 22 years working as a police officer, undertaking both uniformed operational and plain-clothes specialist duties. She also worked as a trainer, training consultant and training evaluator. Despite a life-long interest in writing, the demands of the police service meant that for many years, writing remained just a fascinating hobby. But leaving the service and its commitments finally freed up the time to fully indulge that interest. 'Barricades' is the result. She now lives on the Norfolk coast, together with her slightly manic cocker spaniel. Hobbies include travel, dog walking, theatre, sketching and ‘wining and dining.’ She also enjoys swimming, and on a very warm summer’s day has even been known to brave the North Sea. Anne holds a B.A. with the Open University and has also been awarded the Certificate in Creative Writing by East Anglia

Deserves to be a classic in its own right

I have just blasted my way through the last 100 pages of this page, literally unable to put it down. Barricades is the story of Javert from Les Miserables, and follows him from childhood explaining the events in his life that shape him into the harsh, uncompromising policeman we meet in Victor Hugo's classic tale.

The author does a fantastic job of pulling back the layers making us feel anger, compassion and frustration for this complicated man, while the story is rich and the backdrop of late 18th century, early 19th century France so vividly portrayed, it's difficult not to feel transported back in time to smell the stench of the prisoners in the garrison or feel the fear of the those dragged to their death by the insurgents.

Few books make me cry, but this one got me twice; definitely the mark of a good storyteller. Whether you're a fan of Les Miserables or not, give this a try. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Barricades : A Heart-Wrenching Tale

I have not read Les Miserables nor have I seen the movie so for me this was a stand-alone book. I was immediately drawn in to this heart-wrenching story by Ms. Shilton's effortless style of writing. It took only a few pages for me to see, hear and feel exactly what Javert was experiencing. With expertise, the author wove a believable story, introducing three-dimensional characters who evoked raw emotion. Ms. Shilton writes with an eloquence that captures the human spirit - flaws and all. This story, and in particular Javert and Valjean, will stay with me for a very long time. I look forward to more of Anne Shilton!

Fan Fiction Story with Good Points (There is a Spoiler)

I haven't read Les Miserables yet. I've only seen the movie with Russell Crowe as Javert, and I've seen the play. The author admits that though his book is based loosely on Victor Hugo's novel, he certainly took some artistic license...particularly with the end.

I loved this book! It is so rare that I can find a book that I can get into. The author was very successful in making Javert quite sympathetic and bringing up points about why he was the person he was. This character is not generally portrayed in lovable light. Javert is everything we worry about with the law--pig-headed and fanatical upholders who often go to extremes and are unable to judge situations and apply the law accordingly. This author brought up how being raised in a prison could have warped Javert, the social isolation he felt, and the general tumultuous times he lived in that would give him a hatred of disorder.

The story is well written and keeps a generally good pace. The few slow parts pick up speed within a few pages.

The only weakness of the book is that...well, do you remember when you were a kid, and you really loved a character? And then the character died, and you didn't want them to? So you made up ways where they could live happily ever after?

The ending was very sweet. It satisfied the part of me that didn't want Javert to suffer the fate that Victor Hugo wrote for him. Yet, there was a part of me that was dissatisfied because it wasn't a realistic ending for the character. The fact is, Javert was not a man that could be enlightened because he was too inflexible. That is what destroyed him, whereas Jean Valjean was able to change.

But I still have the book in my favorites because I still loved it.

The cosmetics of this book; beautiful! I am a sucker for linen covers. The content; amazing and beautiful color photos. Context; crazy great.Feels like you are going through some of the personal growth of both Alison and Jamie. Some pictures appear as though you've caught them at a very vulnerable time. If you are into The Kills, this is well worth the money.

A tremendous gift for any Kills fan

This is a huge collection of raw, behind-the-scenes photos of The Kills. It documents their road life over the span of (I believe) 10 years.

The Kills are my girlfriend's favorite band, and she was beside herself when she opened this for her birthday. I recommend it to any fan of The Kills.

Great book

I met this book in University and used it during three years. It gives a very thorough idea of what English syntax, grammar and semantic are in a very easy way. It can be used buy someone who has never heard of this things but the level goes high increasingly. The semantic part may be a bit complicated to neophytes but it is easyly attainable with a bit of effort.
Being used to books of this type, in my University days, I can say that this book is the best I have encountered in this particular field of my English studies. It is written for non-English speakers, making it easier to understand the theorical concepts. However, as I said before, it is not a swallow book.
If someone has problems with English syntax or grammar in general I heartily recommend this book.

Not easy, but great!

I highly reccomend this book to anyone who has a background in linguistics and can appreciate its systemic-functional perspective. It is also good for students who want to understand the language as a whole, rather than learning its rules one by one without fully grasping their function within the general structure. Students would need to be guided though, since this book requires a very analytical reading.

This class was difficult. After so many years of studying tree diagrams, this was a completely different way to analyze sentence structure. Truth is, it's pretty interesting.

American Philosophy From Wounded Knee to the Present

So much is wonderful, thoughtful, and informative about this book and so much is dogmatic and infuriating. I loved most of this book with its provocations, but it began to wear out its welcome towards the end. Erin McKenna and Scott Pratt are both professors of philosophy at Pacific Lutheran University and the authors of this lengthy, ambitious book, "American Philosophy From Wounded Knee to the Present." This book is a history of American philosophical thinking, social and political thinking, polemic, and much more.

The book sees American philosophy as centered in a philosophy of resistance. The book observes that some individuals have denied that there is an "American" philosophy "because it associates the endeavor with industrial capitalism, militarism, the creation of grinding poverty and extreme wealth, exploitation based upon gender and race, and global domination." This would present a dismal picture indeed, and the book focuses on the path of American philosophy as "inexorably bound to a history of domination and the struggle for liberation" and for its resistance to what the individuals denying the possibility of an "American" philosophy understand of the nature of American life. McKenna and Pratt thus devote a great deal of attention to writers that for a long time received little attention in the study of American philosophy -- Indians, African Americans, women, Latin Americans, and more. The book intertwines discussion of these once little known figures with a treatment of American pragmatism and its successors in American academic philosophy, particularly analytic philosophy. It is sometimes difficult to tell which philosophers are on the side of resistance.

The book is in six large parts organized chronologically as well as thematically. The opening part covers the years 1894 -- 1918, with the end of WW I. Besides discussing early Indian, feminist, and labor figures, the book describes the American thinkers Peirce, James, Royce, Dewey, and Jane Addams. There is a great deal to cover in the small space of each chapter, and the discussions are good, if quick. The second part of the book covers the period 1918 -- 1939 and the history of these years with attention to W.E.B. Dubois, Morris R. Cohen, Mary Follett, and the cultural pluralism associated with Kallen and Alain Locke. Part 3 of the book covers the years 1939 -- 1979 with the dominance of analytical philosophy in the United States together with the rise of philosophers from a variety of competing perspectives who found that analytical philosophy was limited in scope and believed that philosophy should move at least in part in other directions. In part 4, McKenna and Pratt discuss early environmental philosophy, social critics such as C. Wright Mills, and political philosophers including John Rawls, Robert Nozick, and Noam Chomsky. Part 5 includes chapters devoted to Latin American, feminist, Indian, Black Power and environmental thinkers of the second half of the Twentieth Century. In the final part of the book, the authors offer valuable suggestions for exploring the work of key American thinkers such as Peirce, James, Dewey, and Royce and discuss their views of the current state of American philosophy and of the American polity and their vision for the future.

The value of the book lies primarily in the wonderful diversity and creativity of thinking in the United States. It offers introductions to familiar figures as well as information about thinkers who deserve to be read. There is a great deal to be learned from figures such as Mary Whiton Calkins, Jacob Lowenberg, Vine Deloria, a range of thinkers from Latin America and more that are explored in the book. I learned a great deal as well from the book's exposition of Black Power and feminist thinkers. As the book emphasizes repeatedly, there is value in pluralism and in exposure to widely different points of view. It is always good to be reminded that one can learn from those with whom one may not fully agree. The parts of the book that are chronologically arranged include brief suggestions for reading at the end of each chapter. The extensive bibliography of the book is arranged by chapters thus encouraging readers to research more deeply figures they find interesting.

The book is marred heavily by its polemical tone and by the assurance of the authors that their political vision and understanding of the scope and nature of philosophy are correct to the exclusion of others. The book praises the fallibilism associated with Charles Peirce and other American pragmatists but does not practice it. There is never any doubt about which political and philosophical sides the book is on. The book sees the proper direction of American philosophy as "promoting critical thought and action in a tradition of pluralism and resistance. Without this voice present we are likely to return to or continue the kind of 'culture wars' that were spawned in the United States in the 1960s and continue in various forms to this day." The spectre of the 1960s hangs heavily over this book. Perhaps there is a sense in which one may find a way out of the increased polarization and a form of healing.

The critical nature of the book circles back on itself. I was reminded of two popular studies to which the authors refer in their introduction: Louis Menand's "The Metaphysical Club" The Metaphysical Club: A Story of Ideas in America and Carlin Romano's "America the Philosophical",America the Philosophical, both of which I have reviewed here on Amazon. These books cover some of the same thinkers and themes as does McKenna's and Pratt's book. They give the sense of the United States as intellectually alive and vibrant in contrast to the derogations leveled by some at "idiot America". At its best, McKenna and Pratt have taught me again to love the United States and the scope it has afforded with its faults for thought, growth and life. This was the primary teaching of the book for me even though it was not the major lesson the authors intended to convey. Readers who love the life of the mind and who are interested in its great variety and iconoclasm in the United States will want to read and mostly love this book.

Fantastic couple of reads

Frank Peretti is a wonderful author who not only writes great Christian fiction novels but very imaginative non Christian ones too! I recommend this set up of two of his novels for anyone who likes to read and wants more from the same author.

The loveliest, most terrifying story I keep reading...

I read this book in middle school, trying to escape the daily grind of it. What I found was terrifying and absolutely beautiful. It made me feel renewed, and just a bit smarter about the world outside of our suburbs and streets. Now reading it 4 years later, all the feelings and images have rushed back and I again feel renewed in many ways, especially in my faith. God certainly has a weird, sometimes cruel way of doing things, but we will come out alright. We will survive. And no matter how grim things look, we are still in his hands, living out his plan, as long as we don't give up.

This is only the second book I have downloaded for my kindle app on my iphone. It was really nice to be able to get a two for one deal as I had a whole week of free time. it was very easy to purchase and then pull up anytime I had a free minute!
