What a magnificently breathtaking and exquisitely brilliant creation that far exceeds words and instead finds itself firmly rooted to the ethereal plane of emotions so dark and deep that very few dare to explore. The themes touched on throughout these pages will shred and destroy your soul, and only your heart will be able to save you. The darkness that boldly seeps around you can only be counter-balanced by the light that dares to desperately make its intentions known. There is no middle ground, so unlike this grey world we find ourselves living in, a side must be chosen. Just be careful not to lose yourself after the choice has been made.

Through a series of horribly unthinkable events, Sara finds herself thrown into a world that is as deadly as it is beautiful. She has no clue as to her fate, but she continues to stand firm against the silent yet consistent undercurrent that is always pulling at her. When she is handed a golden opportunity to change her circumstances, she grabs on with white knuckles and swallows her fear in order to do what others have not been able to. The decision to live her life on her own terms will either become a deceptive promise or an iron-willed truth. Thane has a fiercely single-minded focus on his job. I am still in shock and reeling from this amazingly stunning journey with Sara and Thane. Always kept on the edge of my seat even from the very first word, I am desperate to know what happens next. Two very different yet connected lives converge and collide in this recklessly paced rollercoaster rode. No detail is every insignificant when your life is not your own, and when you are desperate to reach a loved one, nothing can keep you away. Thane and Sara seek two very different goals, but within the other they find a desperately craved solace and a deeply rooted fulfillment that leaves them breathless and bewildered. These characters are so powerful and raw, and I love watching them breathe much needed life into each other. It’s incredible to watch the effect they have on the other, and to begin to learn their stories and how they are unknowingly linked. They are simply stunning, and I couldn’t get enough of them.

Toni Vallan is a truly inspired and insanely talented author who I can’t wait to see bloom into their full potential. Without a doubt, Vallan is definitely a force to be reckoned with! There is something huge and beautiful that grows with each word read in this book that you can’t see or touch, but I felt it with every part of my heart. Keeping genius like this quiet after the beginning of such a superb story as this one will be virtually impossible. Everyone needs to experience the full depth and breathe of this harrowing and heart wrenching journey!

I had a lot of questions at the beginning of Beautiful Collision but I think that's normal

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I had a lot of questions at the beginning of Beautiful Collision but I think that's normal. You're always curious about the stories of each character and how they're going to meet. The answers eventually came so while I read through it was hard sometimes to be wanting the answer but not able to find it at the time.

There were multiple perspectives, including those of Thane and Grey. It was difficult at times reading and seeing the difficulties that Gray especially went through. And then we would get small little clues about her watcher but they didn't really help put things together, just added more questions that I was begging the answers for.

It was certainly and action packed book, and there's a cliffhanger so I honestly am looking forward to the next book so that I can find out what happens next! Toni Vallen is a good writer, and I liked her style of writing.

This is the first work I've read by Hume, ...

This is the first work I've read by Hume, and I'm now committed to reading Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding as well. Written in the form of a Platonic dialogue, Hume uses a back-and-forth format to explore nearly every one of the most commonly addressed objections to monotheistic religious belief. That Hume does not seem to have been an outright atheist but something more akin to a Deist is really besides the point--he reasoned as far as humanly possible in regard to truth in religion almost entirely without the aid of scientific substantiation, and simply went about the task of questioning whether much of religious belief actually made sense in light of reasonable analysis. Truly a remarkable mind and a major heavyweight in the history of scepticism.

About the Author

Howard S. Becker taught at numerous universities and authored many books, including Tricks of the Trade, Outsiders, and Art Worlds. He was editor of Social Problems and past president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems.

Blanche Geer was professor of sociology at Northeastern University and Brandeis University. She served as associate editor of Social Problems and The Sociology of Education.

Everett C. Hughes was professor of sociology at Boston College and The University of Chicago. He is the author of French Canada in Transition, Men and Their Work, and Where Peoples Meet.

Anselm Strauss (1916-1996) was an American medical sociologist and professor at the University of Chicago. He was elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1980.

About the Author
Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

Doesn't come with online access code

I bought this book thinking it would come with the required online access code since I thought all new textbooks come with one, but when I opened it turns out it doesn't! So now I have to spend $60 more for the online access code. So just beware when you're buying it.

Great bio textbook

As you might guess, I bought this for a college biology course. I think it is one of the better science textbooks I have come across so far; everything is explained in easy to understand language, there are tons of illustrations and diagrams, and the text even repeats some of the more complex information more than once in a chapter (in case you didn't understand it the first time). It is well organized. Rarely do I read the supplemental "fun fact" type stories in textbooks but the ones in here are very interesting and actually add to the rest of the material.

Kindle version available on PC

Using a kindle for textbooks may seem like a weird choice, but I happened to get a great amount of use out of it. The kindle reader program is available on your home computer, so you're not stuck reading it on a tiny screen or anything. The ability to search the document for keywords, or quickly swap between chapters made my time using it a lot easier.

As for disadvantages, the price is one. Paying $70+ on a digital file seems a little high, even if it is cheaper than most other versions of the book. Secondly, the kindle app is a little touchy when it comes to swapping pages. Often trying to read the text at the bottom of the page resulted in swapping to the next one on accident.

Spot On

Written in the 1984 Schaeffer seems prescient to the present realities of the evangelical faith. His understanding of history, philosophy and theology combine to help the readers understand why we are where we are, and the possibilities of where we will be if we continue on the present course.

His use of the watershed concept concerning the acceptance of the Bible as the inspired word of God is being played out even today. There are scholars who see the Bible as a collection of stories, others who try and take the cultural realities out and make the words fit their desired understanding, and those who accept the Bible as the truth of God, and each of these foundational beliefs ends up in a different place theologically. Few today Schaeffer allow the Bible to serve as critic and judge of culture, and for that he says we pay the price by undermining the very beliefs that criticism and judgment can happen. As a friend of mine says, when the Bible goes the way of relativism then you're at a baseball game with no ball, no rules, and thus no game.

Too many people who want to identify with evangelicalism today did not and do not heed the words of this wise man. Accomodation is accepted as a form of making Christianity relevant, and thus diluted and deluded, and Schaeffer noted where this could lead, and he was, spot on.

Only read this book if you want want to know why you are where you are today, either standing frm in the validity of the Scripture, or playing baseball with no ball, or at least with major rules changes.

Terrible Writing

It's been some time since I read this book, but I am still astounded at Ms Havens' response to my criticism. I wrote her to express my dismay at the quality of writing in this book - too many incomplete sentences and choppy plot development made it a difficult read for me.
Ms Havens replied that firstly it wasn't her fault, that these were typos; secondly she claimed that good grammar and sentence construction made for a boring book....she preferred to write as her characters speak, inferring that none of her characters can string a proper sentence together AND inferring that quality authors who have produced classic literature and used correct grammar and sentence construction were just too boring for words.

A tribute to Coach

As a student, I used this book in both undergraduate and graduate study. It presented the theory and pratical design of hydrology, erosion/sediment control and various other topics in a straight forward manner. Higher mathematics are only presented in order to explain rationale behind theory. The material presented is the result of years of research by the foremost authorities in sediment & erosion control. The methods and designs are presently state-of-the-art. Furthermore, as an engineer, I find this book an invaluable reference in my library and refer to it on a regular basis.

Excellent text. This book is excellent for student use (undergraduate and graduate courses) as well as professional use. I highly recommend it for anyone analyzing and designing stormwater management systems, including erosion and sedimentation.

Design Hydrology and Sedimentologgy for Small Catchments

I have used this book as a text for over ten years for both graduate and undergraduate classes. It is the most comprehensive book which I have been able to find which treats many aspects of importance to design engineers and hydrologist. For example, it is virtually impossible to find another book which provides in-depth treatment of design of both vegetated waterways and rock rip-rap lined waterways. I strongly encourage my students to keep the text as it is an excellent design reference for the professional engineer as well.
