In addition to examining the major “isms” — liberalism, conservatism, socialism, and fascism — the book explores the history, structure, supporting arguments, and internal complexities of these and recently emerging ideologies.

The text outlines a framework defining each ideology in terms of the four functions ideologies performs — explanation, evaluation, orientation, and political program — allowing students to compare, contrast, and analyze the various ideologies. In addition, the book also shows how each ideology interprets “democracy” (which the authors characterize as an ideal rather than an ideology) and “freedom.” In examining the latter notion, the authors analyze each ideology’s view of freedom in terms of agent, obstacle, and goal.

Brandenburger (Harvard Business Sch.) and Nalebuff (Yale Sch. of Management) argue that most businesses and their transactions lie somewhere between the two poles. Their liberating message is that your competitor does not have to fail for you to win. Conversely, you don't have to fail either. Your failure, in fact, can hurt your competitor. It is better, the authors assert, to have both cooperation and competition. Game theory requires drawing a representation of one's customers, suppliers, competitors, and complementers. In this strategy of business as a game, the rules, players, tactics, and scope can be changed to the individual's advantage. The authors present complicated cases to illustrate their points. The writing is usually solid, but the authors went to the well too many times with some of their examples. A little variety in illustrating their ideas would have been welcome. This book helped form my business model

This book discusses co-opetition, the act of competitors working together in a collaborative effort to increase the pie overall. Co-opetition is a hot topic right now with new competitor-to-competitor exchanges. If you are a game theory enthusiast, you'll be a big fan of this book.
This book gives a good background on co-opetition and on game theory and business strategies. The book starts off dry - but it starts getting really good after the first 30 pages.

I was given this book to read by a Professor when i was doing a Masters Program, upon asking him that i want to know and read a little about Game Theory. Well i liked this book so much that i went online and a bought a copy of my own.

Although, this book was first published in 1996 and for what i reason that i am unable to comprehend is not available with all that ease in book stores. But it was an easy find on Amazon.Com.

This book is ideal for someone like me who saw the movie " A beautiful Mind" and was intrigued by what the main character was doing in the first half of the movie, when he uses Game Theory to come out with a result as to how they can all win without anyone actually losing.

What this book does for a student of Business is, it tells you with Umpteen real world examples; how to make use of game theory in business.

Their easy explanation of and the coining of the term 'The Value Net' is a prime example of what they have done in this book.

All in All, a very good read for everyone, I would highly recommend it to anyone, simply because it is easy to understand and tackles a complicated subject with ease.

A �must-read� for sure

First of all I should state that this book is the kind that will make you ask yourself "Why have I not read it before?"! I strongly recommend it and shortly I will try to explain whom I recommend it and why.
In fact, we are not talking about some recent business book, and therefore the potential reader should not expect to see very recent cases as support to arguments discussed. But still, the issues are very systematically, clearly and simply explained, although the examples that are used to support the arguments are "old".
I met this "potential classic business book" (or maybe already a "classic business book") as I began to be interested in game theory. Therefore I can easily declare that "Co-opetition" is very appropriate for a person who would like to see solid, practical and especially business-oriented application areas of game theory. With this book, a "101 game theorist" can try and improve herself easily. But on the other hand, this doesn't mean that the only target readers of the book are the ones that are interested in game theory. The authors have achieved to develop and illustrate practical recommendations for business world by utilizing game theory concepts. So anyone who is business life will benefit from the concepts for sure.
The language and the methods of explanation are very clear, far from being complicated and straightforward. The authors have supported all the major concepts and conclusions by using real-life examples. This way, the reader has more "reasons" to learn and remember the arguments discussed throughout the book. The logical order and the simple modular approach used to lead the discussions also help the reader understand everything explained easily. Although the book is in fact a "strategy book", the reader does not have to be someone with background information on strategy. But still, if the reader already has some background in strategic analysis, then the book offers a much more beneficial and enjoyable read. On top of everything, the nice but "not-so-difficult-to-handle complexity" of game theory itself is the real pleasure of the book.
I recommend this book to college students who are to enter business life shortly, to people with active roles in strategic decision making processes of their corporations and to people who are interested in game theory but who don't want to cope with the mathematical models of it. Have a nice read...

Not as good as the Brit Montero series.

Heart transplant recipients lately seem to be prime subjects for mystery novels. In this one, a rich man from Miami Beach who has received a new heart searches, against all advice, for the family of the donor. Convinced that the donor was murdered and not a victim of suicide, he begins a search for the truth. Character development is mediocre, and the plot is somewhat tiresome. The spark and humor found Buchanan's other novels is nearly absent in this one. I have read all of her books and this is the one I like the least.

Excellent faced paced mystery!

Super story...another good read by Edna Buchanan. I really enjoy her books on tape, the reader is excellent. This book was quite entertaining, but left me angry at the wife and elder daughter of the main character. They didn't trust or believe in the man they'd known for years and nearly destroyed him in his quest for truth regarding the person who died and gave his heart so Frank could receive a transplant and live. I would have given the book a five star rating had there been more of a finish with his wife and eldest daughter because of their betrayal. Obviously, he just forgives them and goes on with the marriage, but I'd have been a bit more circumspect with the relationship at the end. Nevertheless, the book was really enjoyable. The wife and eldest child will really get your dander up and make you wonder what the heck is wrong with them not to trust the man who'd given them such a wonderful life.

Nice premise, annoying characters

I liked PULSE, but I didn't love it. The novel moved at a quick enough pace, and the plot was both original and engaging. Frank Douglas is a main character who intrigues the reader with his various emotions - paranoia, suspicion, lust, anger, concern, and more. The more minor characters in PULSE, however, are a different story.
Frank's wife, Kathleen (who Buchanan intends to portray as the suffering wife), is in reality manipulative, annoying, and whiny. Rory, Frank's heart donor's widow, comes off as being nothing more than a fliratious, helpless ditz who is constantly is need of a male provider. Even Detective Lucca, who shows so much promise in the beginning of PULSE, is nothing more than a shallow character who has a minute role in the story itself. He seems more a character of convenience than anything else.
Don't get me wrong - PULSE was a compelling, satisfying read. But there is much to be desired, and Buchanan definitely leaves room for improvement.

I Love It!

I loved this book! I've read it so many times I thought I must have a copy. I live in Idaho and I enjoy reading about places I've been to here in the northwest. It's an intriguing tale good for the young and the young at heart. The book is about a family who moves to Northern Idaho so the mother can teach in a mining camp. the problem is, there are no schools. So, along with a large Swedish woman, a thin Irish man, and two spunky kids, she sets up a restaurant. I wonderful story everyone can enjoy!

Bonanza Girl

Bonaza Girl is a book that will leave who guessing till the end. Their are times when it gets boring but then gets exciting agian! The book is about a widow who takes her two children from the comforts of Oregon to the wild gold country of Idaho to persue being a school teacher. But she runs into one slight problem, there are no children in the gold mines! What she and a swedish lady do changes the city of Eagle city forever. Not to mention their family. All in all Katherine, Ann Katie and Jimmey have a blast running their new business. The story is not a true story but is based on some real people and events that happened. It is based in the 1880's. This is a good book for any adventurers at heart.

Fun history of the early northwest.

I first read this book in 4th grade and reread it several times in one year. I can remember telling my mom all about it because it was based in the Northwest. I loved the way the family worked together to give their mom a deserved surprise. I recently found another book by the author and was reminded of my love for this book. I hope I can find a copy to read to my children and let them enjoy the fun.

Wedin offers a rigorous reconstruction of the Governing Deduction and shows how it is used in the arguments that establish Parmenides' severe metaphysical theses (what Wedin calls the Corollaries of the Governing Deduction). He also provides successful answers to most commentators who find Parmenides' arguments to be shot through with logical fallacies. Finally, Wedin turns to what is currently the fashionable reading of Parmenides, according to which he falls squarely in the tradition of the Ionian natural philosophers. He argues that the arguments for the Ionian Interpretation fail badly. Thus, we must simply determine where Parmenides' argument runs, and here there is no substitute for rigorous logical reconstruction. On this count, as our reconstructions make clear, the argument of the Way of Truth leads to a Parmenides who is indeed a severe arbiter of philosophical discourse and who brings to a precipitous halt the entire enterprise of natural explanation in the Ionian tradition.

Really wanted this book

I had the book on my wish list for 6 months or so - when the price dropped below $5, I jumped. Well, there really isn't much insight here for anyone except the author. He claims that getting fat and then getting thin helped him understand how hard it was to lose weight. But, he managed to lose 17 pounds the first month he was on the "2Fit" part and never really explains how.
If I didn't want weight loss tips, I might have found his story more interesting. As it was, I kept reading, waiting for the big reveal. I am still waiting.

long on feelings and recipes, short on application

I was hoping for a lot more information on how his weight gain/loss translated into better results for his clients. He plays lip service to that being his primary motivation throughout the entire book, but never actually gets around to explaining how what he learned actually helped. Makes me feel like it was just a marketing strategy, not R&D. Or maybe it's a good idea but he's not the right guy to apply lessons from it. I dunno. If you're into a bunch of feelings and some recipes you'll probably rate it higher than me.

Fit2Fat2Fit Was Worth My Time and Money But Come-on Drew have a Carrot

I purchased Fit2Fat2Fit a week ago after following the A&E TV series. The show is totally awesome so I decided to buy the book. First of all I will say is the $10 I paid was well worth it just to find the Spinach Shake recipe. To be honest I have never loved eating spinach but if you try the spinach shake you will be amazed at how good it is and every serving has three cups of fresh spinach in it. I loved the shake for breakfast, lunch or dinner or even for a snack. The book chronicled Drew's idea of gaining 75 lbs. in order to really see what challenges his over weight client were having. I won't go into anymore book detail other than to say it is very interesting and it was worth my time and money. I was a little miffed or put off by the story in the book of Drew's friends bringing him carrots while visiting his home but Drew would not eat the carrots because they contained too much starch. This story made Drew look like a robot who has no trouble not eating something tempting like a cookie or some ice cream. It made me think that Drew is still way out of touch with the normal American and the real life struggles of the Obese. My actual rating is 4.4 Stars.
