Wonderful first steps to understanding Woolf

Woolf is not typically known as a writer of short stories -- "sketches" as she called them. However, the short fiction that she wrote provides a wonderful introduction to her narrative style. The early "Mark on the Wall," "Kew Gardens," and "An Unwritten Novel" give to the reader a sense of how Woolf's technique works within a smaller package than the usual assigned Woolf reading. Her feminist (apologies to VW since she considered the word dead once women were able to earn a living) leanings come through in "A Society" and "Moments of Being: 'Slater's Pins have no Points'." Woolf's early sketches are where she formed her interior monologue style, within which one thing leads to another as the work progresses. These short fiction works should be required reading for anyone delving into Woolf. Possibly those who read these sketches before they dive into the novels would understand a bit better of what Woolf's fiction is made. Excellent.

Lady in the Looking Glass

My favorite story in this collection is "The Lady in the Lookinglass." This story contains a powerful image: the yearning to completely comprehend another person. Such longing, as the narrator distinguishes, is not desire for "dinners and visits and polite conversations," nor "things she talked about at dinner," but something deeper, "her profounder state of being that one wanted to catch and turn to words."
On one hand, Isabella represents a synecdoche. If the narrator understands her deeply enough, he could "know everything there was to be known about Isabella," but also life, and perhaps all persons as well.
On the other hand, perhaps Isabella objectifies the inability of one person to scale walls of privacy and anonymity another erects to protect herself from intimacy.
Our sympathy straddles that wall, perhaps lying first with Isabella who veils herself, then with the narrator who longs to know her. We aren't shown why Isabella has become the trembling convolvulus. But no one's face should reflect "masklike indifference." The phrase is not congruous -- the need to mask is anything but indifferent. And can't we concede tragedy to anyone who, after 50-60 years, remains a person for whom another can claim, "The comparison showed how very little, after all these years, one knew about her; for it is impossible that any woman of flesh and blood of fifty-five or sixty should be really a wreath or a tendril"? This is a heartbreaking image.

Just as Enjoyable as her Novels

This book is great if you have read all of her novels or have yet to pick up one. It can introduce you to Woolf's style or if you already know what a wonderful writer she is, it will continue to entertain you. These short stories also let you see how she developed some of her novels as well as her style throughout her life. She was unbelievably dedicated to her writing, and this book makes her efforts clear.

About the Author
In 1854 at the age of twenty-four, John Miller Dow Meiklejohn translated Immanuel Kant’s "Critique of Pure Reason" into English and it would remain the standard translation for many years. However, it was in another area of Victorian writing that Meiklejohn’s name would become celebrated. He wrote and published the most comprehensive set of schoolbooks, lesson materials and instructional texts for schoolmasters yet seen in an English-speaking classroom. Foremost and longest lasting among those books was "The English Language: its Grammar, History and Literature" (1886), which reached over thirty editions in Britain, the U.S.A. and the British Commonwealth. This revised edition marks the 125th anniversary of its first publication by Blackwood and Sons in London. The book was intended to provide novice teachers with a more complete understanding of the English Language. From this book they could then create their own lessons for their own students. Modern teachers of English worldwide have a similar requirement and it is the aim of this modern edition of the book to help them obtain it.

The Ultimate Teacher's Guide to English Usage

As a former English major and ESL teacher I have long felt that the generation following mine was poorly equipped to teach English grammar to mainstream or ESL students. The students of the seventies and eighties (when the teaching of grammar was sorrily lacking) were themselves missing many of the basics necessary to impart the historically correct principles of this complex language to others. Although I understand that languages constantly evolve as new or previously unacceptable words and phrases become common parlance, it is still important for teachers to have a solid grounding in basic terminology and in grammatical and syntactic rules. This is especially true for those teaching ESL, as many students' native language is based on entirely different structures.
Enter Fraser's new book, a revision and expansion of the grammar and history of the English language. As complete and comprehensive study of its development and usage would be hard to find. It is logically organized, exhaustive in its scope and full of clear, often colourful examples of the point being made. His section on word branching, including many words that have their roots in Latin, Greek or other antique tongues, can be very useful for students studying advanced English, where the root can be transferred to form or recognize other words encountered. Even the story of the evolution of Modern English is itself of interest.
This tome is probably too exhaustive for ESL students to plough through. However, a teacher could use this book as his one go-to reference guide for any grammatical or syntactic question, and be assured that he has everything he needs at this source to impart the required knowledge to his students. I would call this book indispensable for your bookshelf. An admirable achievement!

A Useful Resource

In everyday parlance many things are described as "Awesome", or "Truly awesome". And along with a diminution of our vocabulary there seems to be an increasing tendency to ignore grammatical structures: for example "This just in"; "I'm like really there...".
All languages develop and change but the narrowing of vocabulary and the increasing reliance on ungrammatical and over-used slogans and phrases can make our language colorless and lacking in discernment.
Well written and spoken sentences provide a much more clear, accurate and precise meaning to the reader and listener and this is why Fraser McKen's book "Professor Meiklejohn's Grammar and History of the English Language" can be very useful to those who write and speak English.
The book is a renovation of Professor Meiklejohn's original work, first published in 1886. McKen has brought this book into the twenty-first century by updating the grammatical usage and by expanding many of the concepts and examples.
McKen's book meets the needs of four different audiences.
Firstly the book can be used by students who are learning English. The rules of grammar are clearly explained with an abundance of examples and applications. Non-English speakers often find the English language to be confusing and contradictory where the rules seem to be applied in an arbitrary and conflicting manner.
Thus when such English learners have questions about verbs matching nouns they can find the answers in the McKen/Meiklejohn book. The book is also an excellent background resource for such learners. For example, Meiklejohn clearly demonstrates the different ways that gender can be denoted and gives the origin of such terms.
The second audience is teachers of English. Any question about the origin or development of a word or a syntax can usually be answered. English teachers can be confident they can answer whatever question about language that their students can pose. For example, a common question asked of an English teacher relates to the use of "that" or "which" as a conjunction: another puzzle for students of English when to use a plural verb when the subject it a collective noun, like "committee" or "herd". McKen lucidly resolves these questions.
The book is also useful to those linguists who are interested in studying the structure and development of English in depth, including those who study the structure of poetry, "prosody". Meiklejohn illustrates the development of English vocabulary and grammar through different periods and discusses landmarks that have occurred at specific times. This includes a discussion of the influences of Norman French and different types of Latin.
Lastly, the book is full of interesting facts that would be eagerly devoured by "knowledge junkies" , those of us who enjoy crosswords and similar puzzles. For example, we often think of the King James Bible as an example of mainly 17th century English, whereas most of the language used was based on 16th century structure and usage.
Although the book can meet the needs of various audiences, there is often no demarcation between the needs of a new English learner and those of a more knowledgeable reader . Thus an explanation of active and passive verbs leads to an extensive discussion of various verb types and tenses; a new English learner may not be looking for such a detailed discourse.
The book belongs on the shelf of an English Teacher or Professor. It is a valuable tool in the teaching and study of English.

The world needs this book.

It's my hope that teachers will use this book well before high school. As far as I know most teenagers are totally unaware of terms as simple as verb, noun, subject, object.

As for verbal use has anyone listened to the CBC lately? Even the venerable Globe and Mail needs this book. Let's hope we all benefit from the work of Mr. McKen. Bravo.

About the Author
Dr Greg Mills currently directs the Johannesburg-based Brenthurst Foundation, established by the Oppenheimer family in 2005 to strengthen African economic performance. During 2006 he served as head of the 'Prism' strategic analysis cell and special adviser to the Commander of the Ninth International Security Assistance Force based in Kabul, and in 2008 was seconded to the government of Rwanda as strategic adviser to the president. During 2009 he served as a member of the Danish Prime Minister's Africa Commission, and was a visiting scholar at the Centre for African Studies at Cambridge University. From 1996-2005 he was national director of the South African Institute of International Affairs.

China has 160 cities with populations exceeding one million and 14 with over five million. Increasingly these cities are becoming linked to create urban areas with 30+ million, the size of many European nations. Soon there will be one billion urban dwellers in China, creating enormous demands for infrastructure and resources such as clean water. Yet, 40% of China's rivers are seriously polluted - thus, China plans to invest $636 billion in water-related projects through 2020. Meanwhile, real estate investment hit $980 billion in 2011, up from $120 billion in 2003. China's leading developer, built 80,000 apartments in over 25 cities in 2012 alone, with sales of about $16 billion.

The second is huge manufacturing scale - it has increased enormously over the past 30 years and is worth $2.2 trillion/year now in value-added terms. It makes 80% of the world's air-conditioners, 90% of PCs, about 70% of the world's solar panels, 90% of our mobile phones, and 65% of our shoes. Manufacturing comprises 40% of China's economy and employs 130 million directly. The most global Chinese company is Huawei, which began by developing lower-priced equipment for second- and third-tier cities in China, avoiding competition from major global manufacturers. It then expanded abroad into less-developed areas in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. By 2012 it was the world's top telecommunications-equipment company, earning two-thirds of its $36 billion outside China.

Third - rising Chinese consumers. Some 300 million Chinese have entered the middle class already, and another 200 million are expected to do so by 2026. The Asia-Pacific region will account for two-thirds of the world's middle class by 2030. Tyson Foods' China operations can process over 3 million chickens/week; Chinese chicken consumption is expected to increase 18%/year for the next five years. In 2013, a Chinese firm spent $7.1 billion to buy America's Smithfield, the world's largest pork producer and processor.

The fourth - lots of money, over $15 trillion in bank deposits and growing by $2 trillion/year. Foreign-exchange reserves total $3.5 trillion, and its yearly trade surplus with the U.S. has grown from $10 million in 1985 to over $300 billion in 2012.

Number five - China is becoming a brainpower behemoth, thanks to doubling spending on education and increasing the number of college graduates 7X since 1998 - 1 million in 1998, 7.5 million in 2012. China accounted for 2.2% of world R&D spending in 2012, 12.8% in 2009, and is now second to the U.S. Huawei has a 150,000 person work-force, with 68,000 in R&D; Cisco has 66,000, with 21,000 in R&D. The bad news is that 25% of 2012 college graduates failed to land a job by the end of the year.

Last - China has more Internet users than any other country (550 million), and that number is expected to explode.

The Sleeping Chinese Dragon Has Finally Awakened...to Eat Your Lunch

China is the second largest economy in the world, after the United States, and rapidly will become number one, with new opportunities for some Americans.

In their recent best-selling and wryly titled book, designed to introduce American businessman to modern China, two Peking University Professors explain China Business in 6 short stories, Professors Jonathan Woetzel and Jeffrey Towson highlight and explain six trends in China:

1. URBANIZATION: “China is currently witnessing the largest migration in human history. Hundreds of millions of people are flooding from the countryside into the cities.” 300 million have done so already and another 350 million are likely to follow. “There will soon be 1 billion Chinese city dwellers,” in lots of new cities, generating and spending great wealth.

2. HUGE MANUFACTURING SCALE: The cost of producing a unit of production usually decreases with the total number of units produced, due to the learning curve, and with the rate at which they are produced, due to efficiencies of scale. This leads Chinese companies to invest heavily in production equipment and personnel, hoping to drive out their competitors with lower prices allowed by their lower costs.

3. RISING CHINESE CONSUMERS: “Chinese (and Asian) middle class consumers are the future,” far more important than Europe, Brazil, Russia, or even India, and eventually eclipsing North America.

4. MONEY---AND LOTS OF IT: “China has over $15 trillion in bank deposits and these grow by over $2 trillion every year.” A trillion here and a trillion there, and you are beginning to talk about big money.

5. THE BRAINPOWER BEHEMOTH: “…the number of college graduates has gone from approximately 1 million in 1998 to 7.5 million in 2012.” There graduates, especially those trained at the best schools in China and the U.S., form a highly valuable resource in the global competition for markets.

6. THE CHINESE INTERNET: Professors Woetzel and Towson note that the Chinese Internet, a much more recent innovation in China than in America, now has a half-billion participants already, twice number of Americans, and Chinese is the predominant language of the Internet world-wide. “In the 60 largest Chinese cities, people spend around 70 percent of their spare time online.” Amazing!

“Word of mouth,” as opinion expressed on the Internet, is of particular importance in China, where government-influenced sources of information are generally less trusted. Bloggers are powerful.

Highly informative and entertaining read. Edutainment made in China.

The book offers exactly what both authors promise: It decodes the six mega trends that currently drive and will continue to drive China's future. Easy to read. Easy to remember.

Each chapter is condensed into a handful of key points/statements which help the reader to understand and remember the underlying mega trend. Additionally, the utilisation of real entrepreneurial success stories gives immediate understanding how people rode the respective mega trend while also offering casual "edutainment" and a rare "look behind the curtain".

China buffs/insiders will eventually want to read more about each of the mega trends. If the book would claim to be exhaustive, this would be a acceptable criticism, but this is - as stated - not the objective of the book.

Having studied, worked, lived several years in China now, I still very much appreciated this clear and concise 60-90min read to sharpen my understanding about the six mega trends.
