The classical expression of soteriology (salvation theology) has tended to spiritualize salvation and place it on a supernatural plane where it loses contact with the existential lives of people. In the face of this heritage, questions have risen from contemporary experience that challenge the Christian tradition. Does life have meaning? Is love at the core of al reality? In Gifted Origins to Graced Fulfillment, Kerrie Hide searches for responses to these questions.

Hide examines the soteriology presented in the Revelations of Divine Love, composed by Julian of Norwich. She analyzes the understanding of salvation expressed in the Visions, or showings of Julian and expands previous theological inquiry into Julian's texts. After demonstrating how Julian's theology is a trinitarian theology of love, Hide addresses each aspect of Julian's soteriology within the framework of her trinitarian formula. The theological precis reveals that, for Julian, salvation is a process of oneing in a mystical, three-part journey from our origins with God to our ultimate return to God.

Hide's analysis provides a hermeneutic for examining mystical literature theologically and demonstrates the important contribution mystical theology makes to the broader field of theology. She contributes a systematic study of Julian's understanding of salvation not undertaken previously.

In Part One, Hide examines Julian's Visionary experience and her expression of the experience that led others to reflect on, record, and write about her texts. She also presents a hermeneutic for interpreting Julian's showings. Part Two presents Julian's soteriology as a trinitarian soteriology of oneing and explores how our life is in three stages. In Part Three, Hide delves into our gifted origins. She surveys Julian's creation theology and her anthropology.

Part Four focuses on Christology. This section presents Christ's role in redemption through the cross, through his work as servant, and through his function as mother. Part Five inquires into graced endings. The chapters examine the present experience of graced fulfillment in the power of the Holy Spirit and the hope for fulfillment in the eschaton. Finally, in Part Six, Hide draws together Julian's understanding of salvation. She appraises the relevance of these teachings for today.

About the Author

Mike Sullivan is Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, having taught there for more than 30 years. He received his PhD in mathematics from Illinois Institute of Technology. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and currently resides in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Mike has four children; the two oldest have degrees in mathematics and assisted in proofing, checking examples and exercises, and writing solutions manuals for this project. His son, Mike Sullivan, III, co-authored the Sullivan Graphing with Data Analysis series as well as this series. Mike has authored or co-authored more than ten books. He owns a travel agency, and splits his time between a condo in Naples, Florida and a home in Oak Lawn, where Mike enjoys gardening.

Mike Sullivan, III is a professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College. He holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in both mathematics and economics. Mike is an author or co-author on more than 20 books, including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer who tries to spend as much of his limited free time as possible on the golf course.

A Sincere Review (this is not for fluff)

Ethel Herr's book is the most inspiring instructional book I have ever read - on any subject.

Within just a few pages, she somehow becomes personally involved in the reader's development as a writer. Her overview on "What is a Christian Writer" really does go to the heart of writing as an art form, what it means to be a writer, and understanding the impact of your work. Most of all, I appreciate the integrity of her work and the simplicity with which she writes. She emphasizes that a writer's craft must be developed with a heart for truth and sincerity as well, no matter what you write; and that you must take responsibility for what you produce.

I've gotten more out of a few sections of her book than I did taking a writer's course. It is something to be experienced, not merely read.

Truly a Complete book on arranging!

Having bought many arranging books, Nestico's is my favourite. I got the first edition with a CD. I could only imagine the revised edition is better as it's just more music.
Containing 71 music examples EACH one of them is exceptionally good music. The genres they reflect is everything from big band to neo-classical to film scoring to marches to electronic 80's music. Everyone of them is a joy to listen to and a gold mine to study. He provides good examples of solo instruments in use and various voicing and orchestrational techniques. Many of which shows us were people like John Williams come from musically.
At first I got a little annoyed with his not so perfect notation as several accidentals are missing, but after a while I stopped caring about it and started to focus on learning instead.
He starts with plain technicalities before moving on to instrumentation. The chapter on Saxophones alone are a studies worth in arranging for big band since all of his examples are for band.
His information about instrumentatio is probably not the most detailed and especially not for the more exotic instruments, but the scores and music examples make up for it. His examples for strings and woodwinds are by far the most exciting I have encountered outside of the classical/symphonic idiom.
Another annoyance is that on a stave for 4 trumpets for example the voice shifts from 4 notes to 2 to 3 and back to 4 or something like that, and he doesn't indicate how he orchestrates the shifts. This is a real let down to the otherwise great book as this happens a lot. Still it's not enough to not give it a 5 star review!
After all the notes on instrumentation (roughly half the book) he proceeds to pour out experience on how HE writes arrangements, shows us his progress. Talks about his concern on intros/endings aso also providing a fresh tale of ensemble counterpoint. Before continuing with technology he has a short chapter on orchestrational colors, which I guess was a chapter for him to show of exciting timbres/combinations he himself finds exciting - and they sure are! Technology has two guest composers writing examples and it takes you back to the 80'es! Some extremely cool and others bordering cheesy. But the cool ones really also are worth studying.
The last chapter of examples tackles the symphonic band that is inherent in American music. I've never seen a book on arranging that shows this and again, wonderful music and scores.
His reflections at the end shows you how he is a normal man writing music. Very down to earth and great anecdotes to teach aspiring musicians some lessons before they happen.
This book is for everyone studying arrangement, instrumentation, orchestration, composition in whatever field or genre!

About the Author
JONATHAN EARLE (Ph.D., Princeton University) is Associate Professor of History at the University of Kansas, where he is also Associate Director for Programming at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics. In 2005, Earle was named a �Top Young Historian� by the History News Network. His book Jacksonian Anti-Slavery and the Politics of Free Soil, 1824-1854 won the James A. Broussard Best First Book Award from the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic. Earle has also authored many scholarly articles and book chapters on abolitionism, the history of the early republic, and John Brown. He has received fellowships from the NEH and the American Council of Learned Societies.

On October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown and 19 others seized the United States Armory and Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. The actions of Brown's men brought national attention to the emotional divisions concerning slavery.

In the summer of 1859, John Brown with 21 others took up residence near Harpers Ferry on the Kennedy farm a few miles northeast of Harpers Ferry in Maryland. He trained a group of twenty-two men, including his sons Oliver, Owen, and Watson, in military maneuvers. On the night of Sunday, October 16, Brown and all but three of the men seized the armory, Halls Rifle Works and hostages from nearby farms. The first Harpers Ferry citizen to confront the raiders was Hayward Shepard, an African-American railroad baggage handler.

In general, the plan was to seize weapons and to add African-Americans to the party. Within 12 hours from the beginning of the raid, authorities in Washington ordered Colonel Robert E. Lee and an infantry detachment to Harpers Ferry. At 6:30a on the morning of Tuesday, October 18, Lee ordered a group of men to storm the engine house. In the brief but dramatic assault, Brown was received a serious head wound. Brown was taken to the Jefferson County seat of Charles Town for trial.

In his brief history of Brown and his raid, Jonathan Earle sketches the key elements of Brown's life, the political condition of the nation, the raid and immediate responses to it. One historian has describes the responses to John Brown as being being in one of two categories. Brown was incompetent and a sociopath or Brown was martyred by slaveholders.

Earle's work is among the best concise introductions to the event of 150 years ago. Brown receives a new biography about every 20 years. Most recently, Stephen Oates' To Purge This Land With Blood and David Reynolds' John Brown have done much to redeem Brown's reputation. Previous biographies from the 1920s through the 1960 focus on the irrationality and religious fundamentalism of the man. As justice and race issues came to the fore beginning in the 1950s through the present day, Brown's life and crimes have been reinterpeted in the light of the issues of the 1850s and 1860s.

Additionally, terroristic acts motivated by religion are more common today than Americans wish. Brown's understood that America was at war in the 1850s. The enslavement of about four million Africans was warfare against the Judeo-Christian God's desire for complete equality among all humans. Most abolitionists did not see Blacks, enslaved or free, to be equal. Abolitionists for the most part wished to do away with slavery but not inequality. Brown wished to do away with both slavery and inequality.

I'm a longtime fan of the Bedford Series in History and Culture, and this new volume on John Brown's raid only reenforces my admiration. It offers a good introduction to the events leading up to the raid, the raid itself, and its immediate aftermath, as well as a judicious selection of pertinent contemporaneous documents: Brown's writings during the Blood Kansas months as well as a hair-raising account of the Pottawatomie massacre by a couple of survivors; Brown's writings about the raid itself, including the constitution for the free state he intended to found, transcripts of pre-trial interviews, snippets of his trial testimony, and several letters he wrote while awaiting execution; and newspaper editorials commenting on the raid, Thoreau's purple defense of Brown, Virginia Governor Henry Wise's address to the Commonwealth's legislature, and excerpts from the congressional Mason Report. There's also a good map of Harper's Ferry, a helpful chronology, and a bibliography.

Perhaps it's beyond the scope of this volume. But I would've liked to have seen some discussion, both in the introduction and in the compiled documents, about the deep ethical and political questions raised by the raid. As Brown says in his letters and pre-trial interviews, the raid was justified (in his mind) by a "higher law" appeal. The Constitution may sanction slavery, but conscience and the word of God do not. But as Governor Wise (as well as Abraham Lincoln, for that matter) responded, the law of the land is and ought to be inviolable. Appeals to higher laws are too subjective--too anarchic, as Wise says--to be allowed. The fascinating thing about this debate is that it's really quite independent of how one thinks about Brown. One can easily conclude (for example) that he was a fanatic who was morally wrong to attack Harper's Ferry, while still affirming that there are times in which higher law appeals are not only reasonable but morally obligatory.

When does moral law trump social law? Ought conscience be given priority in a conflict between it and the law of the land? This is really the core issue that Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry raises, and it's still very much a live one. Ought legal injustices to be tolerated until the law can be changed? But what if the powers that be refuse to change the laws? What then?

John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry is often the topic of study in classrooms and American history. Professor Jonathan Earle's book is exactly what is needed to understand his thinking, by publishing most of the agreements and articles that Brown wrote throughout the years 1851 - 1859. I research and write about John Brown frequently -- most recently with a chronology of his photo portraits (daguerreotypes) John Brown Photo Chronology; catalog of the exhibition at Harpers Ferry 2009. This documents book has what I wanted to reference, all in one place.
